Operations Update: Florida, North Carolina, Guam

The natural disasters of 2018 have kept Team Rubicon volunteers active and engaged. So far this year, Team Rubicon has conducted 81 disaster operations and Greyshirts have spent 75,464 hours getting trained up and ready to respond. RESPONDING

 

GUAM
In the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yutu, our reconnaissance team is on the ground in Guam meeting with local officials and identifying unmet needs across the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) – including in Saipan and Tinian, which took a direct hit from the eye wall of this Category 5 equivalent storm. They are determining how Team Rubicon can plug in to help these communities stabilize and recover. Watch the latest update from the team on the ground below.

 

FLORIDA
Hurricane Michael made landfall on October 10. Since then, there have been 121 volunteers on the ground in Florida in Jackson, Calhoun, and Bay Counties. These volunteers have completed a total of 2,950 hours of work. Team Rubicon has valued this volunteer labor at $85,113.40. This number will only continue to grow as Team Rubicon expands this response. To assist in on-going hurricane response and recovery efforts, volunteers have been conducting damage assessments, sawyer operations, expedient home repairs, spontaneous volunteer management, and heavy equipment operations. There has also been a task force dedicated to route clearance to ensure roads are open for first responders, residents, and other agencies working in the area.

 

 

NORTH CAROLINA
Up in North Carolina, our teams have not stopped working since Hurricane Florence made landfall on the east coast. Team Rubicon Greyshirts are on the ground in Wilmington, New Bern, and Lumberton, NC. Volunteers have assisted 676 family members through damage assessments, sawyer operations, expedient home repairs, and debris removal services.

 

 

TEXAS
In central Texas, a state of emergency was declared on October 16 for 18 communities. Team Rubicon volunteers have begun relief efforts in Kingsland, TX in response to severe flooding from the Llano River. These volunteers will provide damage assessments, muck outs, debris management, and spontaneous volunteer management to affected communities.

 

Rebuild

Down in Houston, TX, our rebuild team welcomed home family number 15. After two months of construction, Dorothy is able to go home. Team Rubicon currently has 8 homes under construction and 33 are approved to begin the rebuilding process.

 

 

MONITORING

The National Operations Center in Dallas, TX is monitoring the impacts of Hurricane Willa and Tropical Storm Vicente.
